School On Wheels to the MAX- Office MAX that is

I see these ladies on the television reporting on fires and floods and murders and accidents. Today I witnessed these ladies in the heart of skid row at School on Wheels to dedicate a computer lab that was donated by office max. The women are all women who work in telvision broadcasting and are a part of an organization called The Good News Foundation.

Karen Foshay who who was also instrumental in facilitating the Office MAX donation said "I keep thinking about the power of one story. There are anywhere from 10-15,000 kids living in cars and in boxes and on the streets . I hope people think about this. It is also the power of what one woman can do when motivated to do the right thing, and this is a tribute to these anchorwomen who are competitors ; to put that aside to accomplish this." Great words and what a powerful tribute.

The Foundation donated $10,000 and facilitated a donation by OfficeMax of office supplies and computer equipment valued at $20,000.

The woman in the turquoise jacket is Agnes Stevens. Agnes is going to Holland to be presented the World's Children's Prize , the equivalent of a Nobel Peace Prize in this category of protecting the rights of the children around the world. She is receiving this honor for her organization School on Wheels.

Skidrowbroadcasting.com will broadcast today at 4 pm today. It was an amazing event yesterday as I and Walter Melton broadcast live over the internet from skid row. I , me, Don Garza , first found out about stickam from the CD 13 blogsite as Eric Garcetti had his Kennedy Award video there. I had no idea the technology was now available to allow the individual members of the community to begin to have live shows on the internet . Walter Melton Mentioned to me after this discovery, if there was a way to broadcast television online after I had told him of my idea to create a clearinghouse of information for the services in skid row . When I checked stickam, I realized that they had found a way to allow individual community members to be able to embed their video tool ,which shows live streaming video, onto any website we wanted to. That is how skidrowbroadcasting.com was created. Having the knowledge and capacity to build websites I was able to create this website and embed the video screen you see here. Walter had a webcam and we experimented and we worked out the kinks and now we can broadcast live streaming video through www.stickam.com. He found that he could use his video camera to broadcast with. I still haven't figured out how to use my mini dv camera yet. But that will be worked out later , since it does have the ability to stream video.

We can go anywhere we want to in skid row and speak with whomever we need to , since we both live here , in skid row Los Angeles. Thus we should be able to bring live streaming of what is actually happening here and pre-recorded video of what is going on. We look forward to your viewership now and in the future.

Christmas Street Meal at the Los Angeles Mission December 24th and other Christmas events

11am-3pm

Los Angeles MIssion December 24th 11 am -3 pm

This is our annual street event, celebrating Christmas by serving our guests traditional holiday meals. We will also be providing Christmas gifts to all children under the age of 14 who are present. We need almost 400 volunteers to help make this event happen. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old and the group limit is 10 including the leaders.

Homeless Memorial Day- Today

Today is the longest night of the year.

This year we had many casualties in skid row that will be remembered. Cle Peters still makes me cry to think of her passing. But we remember all of them.

This year the memorial in skid row will be held today at the James Woods Community Center at 10 am.

Christmas Tree Lighting at San Julian Park

You can get a glimpse of the Christmas tree to be lighted tonight in San Julian Park over at scribeskidrow. The tree lighting will be held by SRO Housing Corporation in San Julian Park. There will be much entertainment and partying going on with lots of holiday spirit. Not with the illegal kind.

Winter shelters open

Eimago, Inc., in partnership with the Union Rescue Mission, is honored
to have the opportunity to be of service once again as we operate the
Winter Shelter Programs in West Los Angeles and Culver City for the
cold winter season. There are 150 beds in Culver City and 160 in West
LA. On Monday, Dec 3rd we will be up and running and ready to receive
our guests that are in need of shelter.

These two Winter Shelter sites will operate out of National Guard
Armories and will run from Monday, Dec. 3rd through Friday, March 2nd
2008 (hopefully longer if we can find a little more funding - stay
tuned). If you are referring guests to us, please be aware that these
are not walk-in shelters. In order to avoid having guests hanging out
in the parks and adjacent communities, we have agreed to only receive
visitors that meet the busses at one of the designated pick-up points.
They will then be transported according to the posted schedule to one
of the shelter sites for the evening. Please also be aware that one
of the pick-up sites may change if we can find a more appropriate
location. I will keep you in the loop if and when that happens.
Attached you will find flyers that have all of the pertinent
information and will assist you in describing what can be expected, to
people seeking shelter this winter season.

In addition, Eimago and the Union Rescue Mission will be operating
193+ Winter Shelter beds/cots out of our main facility at 545 S. San
Pedro Street in downtown Los Angeles. And, you may have heard some
buzz that we have also agreed to take over a contract for the Winter
Shelter Program in Glendale. Unfortunately the Glendale Armory is not
available this season and we have been working with the Los Angeles
Homeless Services Authority to identify an alternate location for the
season. This next Tuesday evening we will be making an appeal to the
Burbank City Council to request the use of their Armory for this three
month season. Please join us as we pray that the hearts of the
Council people and city officials in Burbank will be softened to the
idea of providing temporary shelter for 150 very vulnerable people who
may suffer serious health consequences and even death if we do not
provide adequate beds to shelter them when the weather turns nasty.
